Specifies the purpose of the cost type.

Newly created cost types are automatically assigned the type of Cost Type, but you can change this. Choose the field to select an option. The following table shows the available options.

Cost Type

Posting.

Heading

A heading for a group of cost types.

Total

Totals a series of balances on cost types that do not immediately precede the Total cost type. You use Total when cost types from different groupings should be totaled. If you use the Total type, the Totaling field must not be left blank.

Begin-Total

A marker for the beginning of a series of cost types to be totaled that ends with an End-Total cost type.

End-Total

A total of a series of cost types that starts with the Begin-Total cost type. The total is defined in the Totaling field.

Begin-Total and End-Total are used together to group cost types. The following table shows an example:

No. Name Cost Type

6105

Sales of Retail

Begin-Total

6110

Sales, Retail - Dom.

Cost Type

6120

Sales, Retail - EU

Cost Type

6130

Sales, Retail - Export

Cost Type

6195

Total Sales of Retail

End-Total

On the Actions tab, choose Indent Cost Types. The cost types between Begin-Total and End-Total are automatically indented one space. At the same time, the Totaling field for the cost type of the End-Total type is filled in based on the cost types in the group. In the preceding example, the sales from Dom., EU, and Export would be added and the result displayed in the Balance field for the total Sales of Retail cost types.

It is better to let the Indent function fill in the Totaling field for End-Total accounts instead of adding the numbers yourself.
